Mystery on Rampart Hill (Rocky Mountain Mysteries Llc, 1)
Published in Paperback by Covered Wagon Publishing (April, 2003)
Authors: Emily Burns and John Breeding
Average review score:

This is one of the best books your child will ever read
This new series by Emily Burns is perhaps the most delightful book that my children have ever read. The mysterious plot and the wholesome values presented throughout the book keep my children reading (even after their bedtime)! The illustrations in the book are wonderful as well! John Breeding did a really great job capturing the scenes on paper. I would definately recommend this book to anybody looking for a great book for their child.

Will instill a love of reading in children
Deftly written by Emily Burns, Mystery On Rampart Hill launches the new "Rocky Mountain Mysteries" series for young readers ages 8 to 12. Tyler, Steve, and Stephanie Thompson search the old house on Rampart Hill (which is slated to be converted to a community library) to discover why a series of strange happenings is occurring there. Is someone trying to stop the creation of a library? The Thompson kids are determined to solve the mystery so that the whole town can benefit from the proposed new library. Enhanced with occasional black-and-white illustrations by John Breeding, Mystery On Rampart Hill is the kind of wholesome novel that will instill a love of reading in children and leave them anxiously awaiting the next adventure of the Thompson siblings!

An Outdoor Family Guide to Rocky Mountain National Park
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (June, 2003)
Authors: Lisa Gollin Rocky Mountain National Park Evans and Paula Thurman
Average review score:

An excellent guide to Rocky Mountain National Park
Our family used this guide to prepare for our vacation. It is loaded with detailed information on dozens of locations in the Park. It's all presented in an easy to follow format with hikes grouped by location. If I had one gripe, it would be that there's *too* much information - my head was swimming after reading through it all, and I needed help narrowing the choices down. There's basic information on fishing, horseback riding and other activities as well. It's an excellent guide to the area that would serve you well on multiple trips.

Excellent guide for seeing the park, especially for families
We completed a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park with two children and found this book to be an invaluable guide. It provides an overview of the park and descriptions of 56 separate hikes. It has very clear directions on how to find the starting points for each trail as well as information on the difficulty and distance of the trail. The book also includes a lot of terrific information and ideas about hiking and camping with children. We found everything at the park to be as described in this book. We highly recommend it to anyone visiting Rocky Mountain National Park espcecially those travelling with children.

Author: William W. Johnstone
Average review score:

Preacher's Peace (another winner)
The continuing saga of Preacher Smoke Jensen's mentor and his adventures becoming a legend. Yet another winning novel for Johnstone.

The beginning of the legend.
This is the second book that describes the beginnings of the legend. It begins to show his adventurous spirit and the morals that make him a rough but honest man. It shows that he is a man of peace until pushed. He also shows his love for Jenny but knows they can't be together because of different lives. This book also tells of how "Art" the Mountain Man becomes "Preacher" the legendary Mountain Man.

A Quick History of Grand Lake
Published in Paperback by Western Reflections Inc (20 September, 1999)
Author: Michael M. Geary
Average review score:

Well Done
This book was a quick reading history of a wonderful area in the south entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. Anyone visiting Grand Lake should give this a read, well worth the money.

An educated glimpse into the most beautiful place on earth
Having visited Grand Lake several times in my life, I was very pleased to get "A Quick History of Grand Lake" as a gift from my family. In this book, Geary offers historical insight and interesting anecdotes on the Grand Lake region couched within comfortable prose. Yes, it's a quick history - but it's hardly dull. Whether you've visited Grand Lake once or 1,000 times, there's something in this book for you.

A Rush of Wings
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (February, 2003)
Author: Kristen Heitzmann
Average review score:

An unforgetable story about God's love....
Kristen Heitzmann completely blew me away with this book. Her fast-paced, emotion filled drama with a major twists here and there makes this story a book you'll never forget. After her fiance's abuse, lovely Noelle St. Claire flees her father's New York estate to Colorado where she hopes to find refuge, from what she couldn't explain herself. The unexplainable slivers of memory caused by her fiance's abuse triggers her panic attacks. She ends up in Juniper Falls where she finds a place to stay at Rick Spencer's horse ranch, a Christian man devoted to his Lord. Noelle finds the beautiful scenery of the Rocky Mountains the perfect place to hide away and to paint lovely sceneries. She is immediately pursued by Rick's handsome and charming brother Morgan. His advances causes her to panic and push him away. Rick longs to break through to Noelle to show her God's love and falls for her during the process. Then after a horrible incident, Noelle runs again and this time from Rick. Will she ever allow God's perfect love cast out all her fears? This is one of my favourites by Mrs.Heitzmann. If you like fast-paced plots with major twists with the love of God throughout the whole plot.... This book is for you. I cannot wait to read the sequel,"The Still of Night". It continues the story of Morgan Spencer and is due to be out in September of this year. I definitely give this book 5 stars!

Spotted Bear: A Rocky Mountain Folktale
Published in Hardcover by Mountain Press Publishing Company (August, 1999)
Authors: Hanneke Ippisch and Hedvig Rappe-Flowers
Average review score:

Stimulate discussion of animal differences with Spotted Bear
I used this book to introduce the lesson and stimulate a discussion of animal differences --- by reading, Spotted Bear: A Rocky Mountain Folktale by Hanneke Ippisch, drawing from the students descriptions and predictions of animals or animal evidence such as feathers, tracks, and sounds or animal behaviors and habitats. The tale tells a story about how the spotted bear got its spots but the illustrations by IHedvig Rappe- Flowerstell so much more.

Animals pictured in this book are red squirrel, black bear, great horned owl, deer mouse, gray jay, ladybug beetle, monarch butterfly, raccoon, American crow, red fox, western tanager, common nighthawk, striped hawk, bull snake, deerfly, moose, elk, bison, mule deer, mountain goat, bobcat. red squirrel, ord kangaroo rat, jackrabbit, porcupine, pileated woodpecker, bald eagle, red tailed hawk, northern pigmy-owl, mountain cottontail, carpenter ant, grasshopper, gray wolf, pika, polyphemus moth and cocoon, little brown myotis, grizzly bear, western screech owl, and underwing moth.

Plant life from animal habitats pictured in the book are bearberry, ponderosa pine, calyso orchid or fairy slipper, Oregon grape or holly grape, shooting star, trillium, glacier lily, clematis, mountain bluebell, wild rose or prairie rose, huckeberry, birch trees, beargrass, rose hips, hokecherry, evening primrose, and morel mushrooms,

Other natural phenomena, elements of nature or creations from nature illustrated in this book are northern lights or Aurora Borealis; Ursa Major; bear claw necklace; arrowheads; pine cones; tracks of a moose, a deer, a bear, a badger, a deer mouse, a small bird, a cottontail, a bobcat and a mountain lion; as well as bear facts and more bear tracks.

The book includes a seven page special "Notes About the Art" section identifying what is in the pictures with information about the plants and animals - where they live, what they eat or what eats them, what sounds they make, and other interesting things. This book is definitely a great book to build background as well as to generate discussions to access prior knowledge.

A magnificent tale, beautifully illustrated.
A folk tale with origins seemingly as endless as there are places which serve as habitat for bears. My 5-year old daughter wants to read it every night and to look carefully at the illustrator's magnificent and bright nature work, attempting to find any hidden surprises. The story appears to be for children (and it's fantastic at that level), but the spiritual touch, as well as the obvious Native American influence, bring it well within the realm of interest, fascination and embracing by adults, too.
